Clogged milk ducts are the pits. If you can’t ge Clogged milk ducts are the pits. If you can’t get them cleared out quickly they can lead to mastitis and decreased milk supply. Moist heat, massage, frequent feeding and DANGLE FEEDING will help help clear clogs.

Hover over your baby on all fours and let gravity help bring that milk down as you breastfeed. If doggy style isn’t your cup of tea, just position your baby under the breast and lean forward as much as possible. 🐕 If your baby is older than 3 months he may laugh at you and start swatting your breast 😛. Have you ever dangle-fed your baby or have any special tips of your own for clearing clogged ducts?

I often visit with new moms who are incredibly uns I often visit with new moms who are incredibly unsure whether or not breastfeeding is going well. The most common reasons I encounter for this lack of confidence are:

😶lack of prenatal education about breastfeeding
😶 a first generation breastfeeder with family members who give well meaning advice better suited for a bottle fed baby
 😶underlying anxiety disorder

Most of the time I have the privilege of reassuring her that she is, indeed, winning at breastfeeding! Other times I get to help her troubleshoot and fine tune certain areas, readjust her goals or just be a listening ear.

If your goal is to exclusively breastfeed, the best way to meet that goal is to breastfeed often. You and your baby learn to breastfeed by breastfeeding.

👊🏼There will be plenty of time to work on bottle feeding after breastfeeding is well established. 👊🏼Introducing a bottle before baby is skilled at latching to the breast and transferring milk well can create obstacles to meeting your goals.
👊🏼Supplementing will deny your breasts the opportunity to receive sufficient stimulation that signals the brain to produce more milk which leads to the beginnings of decreasing milk supply.

🗣 Before offering supplemental milk during that first week, swipe over for a checklist to help determine whether breastfeeding is going well. Working together with your child’s pediatrician and a certified lactation consultant is the best way gain reassurance that your body is able to nourish your baby well, if that is your desire.

What reasons did you have for doubting your ability to breastfeed?

What’s your story with red hair? If you’re a ginger mama, do either of your parents or siblings have red hair? If you’re a mother of a ginger babe, do you know how far up your family tree the next red headed relative lies? My little brother has red hair and I always hoped one of my children would inherit that incomplete dominant gene, but it wasn’t in the cards for us 🤪. My husband and I are brunettes and we ended up with four blonde children. 🤔

Hip dysplasia and breastfeeding? No problem! Pract Hip dysplasia and breastfeeding? No problem! Practice nursing in koala hold and you’ll find your new normal. Of course, baby may protest and you may feel clumsy and uncoordinated when trying a new position. Try it several times and get your partner involved to help by getting creative with pillows, rolled blankets, foot stools. Try scooting closer to the edge of your chair or couch and then recline back a little. This mama did not let the pavlik harness, her frog legged baby or mastitis stop her 💪

Blebs are the worst.👺 These painful milk bliste Blebs are the worst.👺 These painful milk blisters on the tip of your nipple are tiny but mighty. Usually, they come about when a milk duct opening becomes occluded by overgrown skin or thickened milk. If left alone, they can make breastfeeding unbearable and may lead to clogged milk ducts and mastitis. Here are two tips to combat blebs before they wreak havoc:

🦀 Soak the affected nipple in warm salt water. Some women have success with the @haakaausa salt water soak trick. Simply fill the Haakaa about halfway with warm/hot water and 1/2 teaspoon salt then suction it to the affected breast for five minutes. If you don’t have a silicone pump, you can just use a shallow dish to submerge your nipple. Once the soaking is complete, with very clean hands , gently exfoliate the tip of your nipple with a warm washrag in circular motions to remove any dead skin. Hand express after you exfoliate to remove congealed milk. Repeat three times daily until bleb is cleared. Make sure your hands are very clean and you are using clean and dry breast pads as to not introduce harmful bacteria or yeast to the open bleb.

🦀 Supplementing with lecithin 1200 mg 3 times daily can help prevent future clogs/ blebs if you find yourself becoming prone to getting them.

🥥🥥 ok, blebby mamas, give us all your best tricks in the comments below!!

Do you sit on edge with your unlatching finger aim Do you sit on edge with your unlatching finger aimed and ready to break suction with every feeding? Is your baby using your nipple as a scratching post as he smooths out those jagged, new, pearly whites? 🦷
.
If so, try these tips:
.
•Look out for biting cues. Babies typically bite most when they are relaxed and full. When you notice he has stopped actively sucking, unlatch him before he has a chance to chomp!
•If he is a persistent biter, practice consistent training. Your natural reaction may be to scream and pull away which can startle baby and may lead to a nursing strike. Instead, try using your finger to unlatch him and say , “don’t bite; that hurts” several times while making eye contact with him. If he continues to bite, gently put him down in a safe spot and walk away. The goal is to train him that you don’t like biting and the feeding will end if he does.
.
•Biting during breastfeeding may be a soothing technique for teething babies. Try unlatching him and offer a frozen teething toy or a breast milk popsicle to soothe his gums.

Draw in a deep, slow breath. 🧘🏼‍♀️ Exhale! 💨

You know that feeling when you have on too many clothes, your baby is fussy and super hungry, you’re hot, you feel the weight of the universe on your shoulders AND THEN . . You strip down (yourself and babe), baby attaches, blinks get long, swallowing is rhythmic and suddenly ALL IS WELL. The oxytocin flows, your breathing slows and you have all you need. This is an experience of instant relief and contentment I have never been able to replicate. ✨

I can think of a few scenarios that come close this instant relief. One that comes to mind is: going pee every time . Urinary urgency after 4 kids is no joke. 😦

What scenarios can you think of that come close to this type of instant gratification?

It can be challenging during the first few days postpartum for a new breastfeeding mom to feel confident her baby is being well fed. Colostrum is very thick and comes in small volumes. The mother’s breasts are not yet full and firm with abundant milk and she is learning the sensations and signs of a good latch for the first time. 😛
::
Once colostrum transitions to mature milk starting around day 3-4 postpartum, baby can be heard swallowing as the milk thins and is more abundant. These gulps can be very reassuring to a new mother. 👶🏻

On which day postpartum did your milk “come in”? Was your engorgement painful ?
